Sydney Roosters co-captain Boyd Cordner will reportedly miss at least the opening 12 rounds of the season, with the club hoping to get $350,000 in salary cap relief.
The Roosters last week put in a formal submission for salary cap relief to the NRL following Cordner's brutal run with repeated concussions according to Fox Sports.
The 28-year-old last November ruled himself out of game two and three of the Origin series after suffering a head knock in the series opener.
It was an incident that garnered widespread scrutiny in light of Cordner's history with concussions, particularly as the Blues skipper was allowed to return to the field after passing a head injury assessment. The NRL also issued New South Wales Rugby League with a formal warning for failing to follow the game's protocols around managing potential head injuries.
The Roosters are eligible for salary cap relief with the three-time premiership winner having suffered his latest head knock at representative level for NSW.
The club is hoping to receive $350,000 in salary cap relief, which is the maximum amount allowed for any player who will miss at least 12 games.
It's understood the club has sought the best medical advice available for their inspirational leader, with Cordner to only resume playing duties once approval has come from the doctors.
