Twist in year-long search for McLachlan replacement

Gillon McLachlan will stay on as AFL chief executive until the end of the season, with Andrew Dillon announced as his replacement, the AFL confirmed on Monday morning.

McLachlan will remain in the position until the end of the 2023 season to deal with a number of unresolved issues, including Tasmania's entry into the competition, a new pay deal and the inquiry into alleged racism at Hawthorn.

In the interim, Dillon will become the CEO-elect and begin the recruitment process for a new EGM of football operations.

Addressing the media on Monday, Dillon said it was an honour to take on the top job after working in several key roles including as general counsel, head of game development and head of football operations.

"It's a really humbling moment to be appointed as the next CEO of the AFL," he said.

Earlier, The Age reported that the club presidents and CEOs were told of the appointment during a phone hook-up.

Dillon had long been seen as the leading candidate, having spent more than two decades at AFL House.

Dillon will officially take over as chief executive from Monday, October 2.

McLachlan announced his departure in April 2022, kicking off a recruitment process that leading journalist Caroline Wilson called "embarrassing" and "unprofessional".
