NASCAR drivers walk away from massive crash

There were scenes reminiscent of Talladega Nights in the latest NASCAR Xfinity Series race as "the big one" struck with a handful of laps to go.

It came shortly after one of the scariest crashes of the day involving Blaine Perkins, who escaped injury after he rolled five times at the famed Talladega Superspeedway.

Perkins was sent into a spin after Dexter Stacey lost control of his car and clipped the No.02 on the backstretch.

While Stacey rocketed towards the inside wall, he got t-boned by the No.5 of Jade Buford.

Blaine Perkins, driver of the #02 Chevrolet, flips after an incident during the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Talladega SuperspeedWway.

That contact was enough to lift the car off the ground and begin a violent series of rolls.

Debris from the crash was strewn all over the circuit. Kaz Grala's car got hit by an errant wheel in the melee.

Perkins was able to walk away uninjured as did Stacey.

"When you get sideways like that it starts to bite and then off it goes," said NASCAR driver and guest commentator Joey Logano.

"At this point, you hope when it's up in the air it doesn't land on its roof.

"Some big hits within the rolls. The revolutions at that speed usually isn't bad, it's the impact when you come down back onto the race track. Those are the ones that hurt.

"He just gets tagged in the right rear which sends him up like that."

It was a crash in a series of scary incidents at the tri-oval perhaps best known for the movie named after it.

The biggest wreck of all came with a handful of laps to go.

A hard-charging Sheldon Creed made his way to the front of the field and was vying for the lead when Daniel Hemric came down the road and took the nose off the No.2 car.

That sent Hemric into a spin, the No.11 setting off a chain reaction as cars tried to avoid the wrecking.

Hemric's car flipped onto its roof and lay stranded in the middle of the road. He was extracted from the car without any injuries.

Ultimately, the race was won by Jeb Burton, who held off Creed in a green-white-chequered finish.
