Marshall set to sign with iconic NRL club

South Sydney master coach Wayne Bennett is set to throw Benji Marshall a lifeline by signing the NRL veteran for his 19th season.

Marshall will sign a one-year-deal to reunite with Bennett once the contract receives salary cap approval.

Marshall is expected to start training with his new teammates at Redfern as early as this Friday, according to News Corp.

The Tigers let Marshall go after last season, but the veteran playmaker was still keen to lace the boots for 2021.

Marshall turned down the biggest contract in Super League history, while also rejecting a move to North Queensland to play under former teammate Todd Payten. He was also earmarked for a move to the Bulldogs as cover for Matt Burton and the Sharks who lost Shaun Johnson to an Achilles injury.

Marshall has played 324 games for the Tigers, Dragons and Broncos since his debut in 2003.
