Karachi: South African cricketer Faf Du Plessis said Test cricket should be taken care of well to save its future.
Speaking to reporters via virtual conference on the sidelines of their training camp ahead of the first Test against Pakistan, Du Plessis said T20 cricket has attracted youngsters as it takes not as much time as Test cricket.
“I am not sure, whether our next generation would be interested in Test cricket. Having played both, I think T20 cricket is more attractive than Test cricket, this is the reason youngsters are more attracted to this shorter format,” he said.
“See, T20 cricket takes little time. Even if you play five to six tournaments, it takes a maximum of six to eight months. Whereas, Test cricket consumes more time and players get lesser time to be with their family or have some other stuff,” he shared.
“Still I believe, Test cricket is the purest form of the game. But there is a need for a balancing act to save the future of Test cricket. It also depends on how we look after Test cricket,” he maintained.
Talking about their Test series against Pakistan, Du Plessis said the time has changed a lot since their team last toured the country in 2007. “It was too long back when we last toured Pakistan. The time has changed a lot and we have a whole different team now. Most of the players we have now haven’t played Test cricket in the subcontinent. So, it will be tough for us but we will try to make our presence felt,” he said.
