The 1500-strong crowd on Court 11 – with hundreds more trying to squeeze their way in – were treated to a humourous moment late in the clash. After Kyrgios crunched a backhand return winner in the second-to-last point of the tie breaker, he took off like the proverbial cat in celebration, bringing a raucous round of cheers and laughter from the crowd.

They will now take on Finland's Harri Heliovaara and Brit Lloyd Glasspool, who knocked over Brazilial Marcelo Melo and Raven Klaasen 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in their second round clash.

Meanwhile, Kyrgios' match against world no.1 has been confirmed for Arthur Ashe Stadium for 9am Monday morning (AEST).
