Insane last-second try seals Super League title

A freakish last-second try from youngster Jack Welsby has given St Helens back-to-back English Super League titles in a thrilling Grand Final.

Welsby's try came just seconds after the full-time hooter had sounded with the scores tied at 4-4 between St Helens and Wigan.

St Helens looked to have botched their chance to clinch the game after Tommy Makinson's drop goal on the hooter hit the post, but what happened next is something that will haunt Wigan fullback Bevan French.

The ball hit the post and bounced back into play and eluded French, allowing Welsby to sneak in and score the try just inches before the ball bounced back out of play.

The 19-year-old was mobbed by teammates after the try as both the commentators and fans were left stunned after the video referee confirmed the on-field call.

"This is a phenomenal finish. You give up on plays like this," one commentator said.

"The most dramatic end to the most engaging game. I can't remember a game like this and I've watched a lot of games of rugby league."
