Exit of Titans 'Mr Fix-it' could haunt NRL club

The Gold Coast Titans returned to finals footy for the first time since 2016 last season, even though they finished with a losing 10-14 record to sneak into the the playoffs.

However, Justin Holbrook's men have shown they're willing go against the grain when it comes to their attacking style.

The team will be looking to add momentum and make a big run in the finals this year but could get bogged down by the same inconsistent form that held them down last season.

Gold Coast coach Justin Holbrook.

Here's Wide World of Sports' preview.

2021 finishing position: 8th

Gains: Isaac Liu (Roosters), Paul Turner (Warriors), Aaron Booth (Storm), Will Smith (Eels).

Losses: Jai Whitbread (Centurions), Sam Stone (Centurions), Tyrone Peachey (Wests Tigers), Jamal Fogarty (Raiders), Ash Taylor (Warriors), Mitch Rein (released), Jonus Pearson (released), Anthony Don (retired).

Best 17: 1. Jayden Campbell, 2. Philip Sami, 3. Patrick Herbert, 4. Brian Kelly, 5. Corey Thompson, 6. AJ Brimson, 7. Toby Sexton, 8. Jarrod Wallace, 9. Erin Clark, 10. Moeaki Fotuaika, 11. Kevin Proctor, 12. David Fifita, 13. Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, 14. Isaac Liu, 15. Herman Ese'ese, 16. Beau Fermor, 17. Will Smith.

Greatest strength: The strike power of their pack with Fifita, Fa'asuamaleaui, Fotuaika and Ese'ese all capable of breaking the line and creating havoc for any defence in the league.

Biggest question mark: With Peachey, Fogarty and Taylor all gone there is massive pressure on four-game first grader Toby Sexton to lead the attack around the park. The forwards will lay the foundation – but can he capitalise on that?

Man under pressure: Fifita was brilliant at times in 2021 but established a reputation as something of a fat track bully. He needs to aim up every week – especially against quality opposition – for the Titans to be a force.

Biggest loss: Tyrone Peachey wasn't the most consistent player at the Titans, but he had the ability to come up with the big plays and could fill several holes. Those players are hard to replace.

Predicted 2022 finishing position: 9th
