Ex-Australian captain Ian Chappell has urged Steve Smith to continue playing his natural game in order to break out of a horrid form slump against India.
Smith was dismissed for just eight on day three of the second Test, his third consecutive single-figure score in the series.
The former captain's current form is a far cry from his dominant 2019 Ashes series which saw him plunder 774 runs in four Tests, with his average since that series a paltry 26.30.
However, Chappell urged Smith to continue playing in the same manner that saw him named the men's Test cricketer of the decade by the ICC.
"You've got to stick to your strengths," he told Wide World of Sports.
"When the bowling side forces you to do different things, they're starting to win the battle, so you don't want to be changing things too much.
"If they have forced you to change a few things, you need to think about it and say, 'Right, I'm going back to what has been successful for me and I'll stick to that', rather than being forced into making adjustments."
Chappell said India has been able to find success against Smith by making him think about his batting rather than allowing him to dictate terms.
"He doesn't look as comfortable and confident at the crease because India have given him things to think about," he said.
"For the last couple of seasons, Smith has been allowed to bat the way he wants to bat and they haven't taken him out of his comfort zone at all.
"Suddenly India have given him something to think about, and batting is much more difficult when the opposition is making you change your thinking and change the way you go about things.
"In trying to avoid one way of getting out, you can create another one, and I think that's happened a bit with Smith."
