Teammate's emotional tribute for 'protector' Kefu

Former Wallabies teammates Toutai Kefu and Justin Harrison had an emotional reunion via video link on Stan Sport's Rugby Heaven as Kefu and his family continue to make strong strides in their recovery from a horror home invasion.

Kefu, wife Rachel and two of their children were badly injured when a group of teens allegedly broke into their Brisbane home in the early hours.

Four teenage boys have since been charged with a total of 44 offences including attempted murder and grievous bodily harm.

"We're all doing really well," Kefu told the Rugby Heaven panel.

"We've been back in the house now a week. It took my wife a while to get back in but we're further down the road than what I would have thought a week ago.

"We're all doing OK."

Kefu, one of Australia's greatest ever No.8s, said the support he and his family had received from the rugby community had been enormous.

"It's been unbelievable," he said while choking up with emotion.

"The outpouring of love and messages of support has been unbelievable. I'm fortunate to be involved in this game."

Kefu family 'in high spirits'

After exchanging some old war stories from their playing days, an equally emotional Harrison paid tribute to his former on-field "protector."

"What an amazing man and the whole family in fact, Rachel, rockin' Rachel and the kids have all been a fabric of that rugby family for a long time, all through Brisbane club competitions as well," Harrison said.

"Talk about having someone beside you that you'd be happy to go into any situation and feel safe.

"Big Kef – he was the enforcer and the protector of everyone on the field and off it now.

"Just horrific (circumstances) that have found him protecting his family but what a hero he is and what a great man to have in our rugby family."
