Carlton has finally sacked under-fire coach David Teague.
Just days after the club said it would take its time to consider Teague's future, the 40-year-old has been shown the door by the Blues.
Teague took over midway through the 2019 season, with the club finishing 11th last year and 13th this season, with eight wins and 14 losses. His overall record of 21 wins from 50 matches saw him terminated a year before his contract was due to end.
His departure means the club is on the lookout for its fifth coach in nine years. Carlton last made the finals in 2013.
"There can be absolutely no denying that David Teague gave everything as senior coach of our football club. He demonstrated care and commitment on a consistent basis, and he never wavered from wanting to make the Carlton Football Club a better place," said club president Luke Sayers.
"While that has not translated into the on-field results we had hoped, we are certainly better for having David as an integral part of our football club for the last four years, two of which were as our senior coach.
It had been expected Teague would be sacked earlier this week, however in a bizarre turn of events, Sayers sent a letter to members saying any decision would be made on a "timeframe that is in the best interest of the club, not based on external expectations or pressure."
Just yesterday AFL great Leigh Matthews slammed the club for its handling of the saga.
"You wonder who's running the footy club at Carlton," Matthews told 3AW.
"I must say, from the outside, whoever's running that football club has got no idea how to run a football club."
Former St Kilda and Fremantle coach Ross Lyon is the favourite to take over the Blues, after Alastair Clarkson yesterday confirmed he'd take a sabbatical in 2022.
