India's all-time cricket embarrassment

Day three, afternoon session, sun shining at the Adelaide Oval.

For more than a hundred years that was time for batsmen to eye up the short square boundaries and fill their boots.

Instead December 19, 2020 will be a date that goes down in cricket infamy as the picturesque ground turned into a house of horrors for India's star-studded batting lineup.

All out for 36, their lowest Test innings score.

The old scoreboard at the end of the Indian second innings.

What a black eye for the world's most cricket-mad nation, 'eclipsing' the 42 all out against England at Lord's in 1974.

"I just can't believe they got bowled out for 36," Shane Warne said in commentary for Fox Cricket.

"I'm still in a bit of shock."

You're not the only one, Shane.

This would have been somewhat believable if it had happened with the pink ball hooping around menacingly under lights.

But the cricket crime was committed in broad daylight, as batsmen's feet got stuck in concrete against the world's best pace attack.

Josh Hazlewood (5-8) and Pat Cummins (4-21) were unerring with their line and length as the ball kept finding the edge then the catchers' palms.

Amidst all the madness great mates Hazlewood and Cummins chalked up significant statistical milestones.

200 Test wickets for Josh and 150 for Pat.

Hazlewood said he had never had a better day in cricket.

"Everything went to plan," he said.

"The way Patty started was unbelievable, to knock out the two big wickets (Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli).

"It's awesome to come out with this lineup and take 20 wickets every game."

Australia reduced India to 6-29 in the first hour after they resumed at 1-9 overnight.

Cummins kicked things off with the scalps of India's two batting kingpins, underscoring his status as the world's premier Test bowler.

"Pretty special that, it can't get much better than that start," Cummins told Fox Cricket.

"Pretty happy out here.

"I thought the first day we bowled really well, created a lot of half chances but all the catches just fell short.

"So it's just one of those days, seems like every catch is carrying and long may it continue."

Mohammed Shami

Cummins said the carnage was "weird" as he felt the pitch had actually got slower on day three.

"But definitely some sideways movement so if you hit that area it's hard work."

That might be the understatement of the year.
