Hero's selfless act to push Aussie mate to bronze

There was a heartwarming moment that led to Australia's Ash Moloney finishing third in the men's decathlon with a fellow countryman sacrificing his own ambition to help Moloney claim bronze with a score of 8,649 points in the final.

In footage revealed of the last event, the 1500m, with the pair making a dash for the finish, Aussie Olympic teammate Cedric Dubler was seen yelling encouragement at him.

"He had me worried for a little bit then I just started screaming at him and we got him there," Dubler said after the race.

Cedric Dubler of Australia encourages his team mate and bronze medalist Ashley Moloney

Moloney said Dubler was encouraging him like a "nutter".

"He was screaming. I can't repeat what he said. I could hear his voice bouncing in my cranium like a bat out of hell," Moloney said.

"I started hitting a wall at 800m and I was a bit concerned but I was like, 'Just stick to Cedric. Don't let him get to far away'. He screamed … like a nutter."

Moloney let out an emphatic "F–k yeah" when confirmation of the final scores came through.

"I honestly do not know how to feel, I crossed the line and saw a PB and thought, 'Oh, s-t we're on'. Then I started crying and it all happened," Moloney said after winning bronze.

"I was just putting one foot in front of the other, I started hitting a wall at 800m and I was a bit concerned."

Canada's Damien Warner took home gold after dominating the entire decathlon from start to finish, while Frenchman Kevin Mayer (8,726 points) won silver.
