Hurricanes big-hitter embarrasses Renegades

Ben McDermott's BBL record had already boasted a blitz of 114 runs from 52 balls and a rapid-fire knock of 67 off 30.

And after spearheading the Hobart Hurricanes to a six-wicket win with 14 balls to spare over the Melbourne Renegades today, the former T20 international can add another brutal knock to his resume.

McDermott plundered 89 not out from 55 balls in the Blundstone Arena clash, and in doing so not only embarrassed the Renegades' bowling attack but propelled the Hurricanes to the top of the BBL table.

Among the Queenslander's seven fours and five sixes was a swashbuckling square drive that rocketed to the boundary for four off the bowling of Kane Richardson, and back-to-back breathtaking sixes over mid-wicket off the bowling of Will Sutherland.

Bustling Hobart quick Scott Boland (2-19 from four overs) was the only bowler from either side not on the victim's end of some incredible power-hitting.

The fireworks began in the Renegades' innings with the bat as Sam Harper blasted an unbeaten 66 from 52 balls and Rilee Rossouw 59 from 40, lifting the visitors to 5-157.

The two Melbourne franchises, the Stars and Renegades, had both managed to defend a score of less than 157 in the earlier rounds of BBL10, but the men in red and black couldn't repeat their heroics.

The table-topping Hurricanes (11 points) are now one point clear of the Stars.
