Australia were slow starters tonight after trailing by four points at the end of the first quarter before kicking into gear during the second quarter.
The Australians responded by outscoring the Germans by eight points in the second quarter to lead at half-time, and from there they never trailed as they cruised to a comfortable win.
There were concerns for the Boomers heading into the match after it was revealed NBA big man Aron Baynes would miss the remainder of the Games due to a neck injury.
Baynes was replaced in the starting lineup by Nick Kay, who had a solid outing with 16 points on 70 per cent field goal shooting.
Veteran point guard Patty Mills once again was the star on the offensive end for the Australians, finishing with 24 points while big man Jock Landeale added 18.
The loss for Germany means they must rely on other results going their way in order to reach the quarter-finals.
Once it's revealed which teams will qualify for the quarter-finals, a draw will determine the match-ups.
