Stubborn Dragons won't rethink Dufty axing

A near-perfect attacking game last night has done nothing to save Matt Dufty from the axe at the Dragons at the end of the season.

Dufty produced a game that the likes of superstars James Tedesco and Ryan Papenhuyzen would have been proud of – two tries, five try assists and numerous breaks as the Dragons put the Broncos to the sword.

But it all counts for nought in the big picture – the Dragons are sticking to their guns and won't change their minds about cutting Dufty loose at the end of the season.

"He was great in attack but let's be honest, it was like an under 20s game," a senior Dragons source told Wide World of Sports.

"Matt is a good kid and he is dynamic when the opposition don't want to tackle him as was the case last night.

"But the bottom line is that his defence just isn't up to the standard you want if you are trying to win a premiership.

"The fact that no other clubs have made him an offer shows that we are not alone in that thinking."

Dragons fans bombarded social media with pleas to retain Dufty in the wake of his stunning performance at Kogarah.

The diminutive fullback has been the club's best and most dangerous player all season – but his defensive problems have resulted in the Dragons making the tough call to not retain him.
