Chelsea to sack Lampard after $300m spree

Frank Lampard has reportedly overseen his final game as the manager of Chelsea, with the club set to sack the current boss.

After spending nearly $300 million on transfers during the off-season, Lampard has come under increasing pressure after an underwhelming season which saw his side drop as low as eighth on the EPL ladder.

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea's players were told not to report to the club's training ground until Sunday afternoon, with the belief that Lampard would be sacked less than 24 hours after the club's FA Cup win over Luton Town.

Former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint Germain manager Thomas Tuchel is widely expected to be Lampard's successor according to Sky Sports and The Athletic UK.

The stunning decision from Chelsea's notoriously impatient owner Roman Abramovich comes after Lampard himself admitted that he was under pressure to retain his job.

"It intensified for me a while ago," he said after the team's recent 2-0 loss to Leicester City. "Because the expectations at this club, whether they are right or wrong, are always high.

"I know we are in a different position with our squad — if you look at our squad today and the age in our squad and look at the composition of our squad, it's a mixture of a young squad, a lot of players, some new players. I keep talking about a transition but when you perform like that, it's normal people will ask questions."

Asked whether he was confident the club's Russian owner, Abramovich, would show patience with him, Lampard said: "It's not my decision. That's something that will always be there.

"When I came into this job, the job of management, you understand some things are beyond your control."
