Conor McGregor has vowed his beef with Dustin Poirier is "not over" after the Irishman lost via a Doctor's Stoppage in the first round of their UFC 264 bout in Las Vegas.<\/a><\/p>\n

With each man having beaten one another in their two previous fights, UFC 264<\/a> promised to be a feisty encounter, with plenty of trash talk in the lead-up. Entertainment was guaranteed, but no-one could have predicted what happened in the Octagon in the third edition of their rivalry.<\/p>\n

'The Diamond' was all over McGregor in the final seconds of the first round, with the clock luckily saving him from a TKO, when a "freak" leg injury ended the fight prematurely.<\/p>\n

Though commentators did not initially realise McGregor had suffered the injury amid a frantic finish to the opening round, it soon became clear when McGregor did not get up and go to his corner. He pointed to his leg as doctors rushed in.<\/p>\n

The crowd was left stunned with McGregor's leg clean broken and in gruesome scenes, wobbling as he lifted it off the canvas. The injury meant the fight was deemed over, and a Doctor's Stoppage, not a TKO, was the end result.<\/p>\n

It was the first back-to-back loss in McGregor's UFC career.<\/p>\n

Replays showed McGregor stepped back awkwardly when the pair were squaring off on their feet, leading to the broken leg that UFC commentator Joe Rogan called a "freak accident".<\/p>\n

Then as McGregor fell to the ground, Poirier was easily able to pummel the helpless Irishman till the bell, without the referee noticing.<\/p>\n

"Wow. Anti-climactic," Rogan said in commentary.<\/p>\n

"Dustin cracked him and that's when he fell back and broke his ankle.<\/p>\n

"He fell back on his own ankle and broke it. That is crazy.<\/p>\n

"It actually broke his leg, the shin, I'm guessing. From where it's bending it looks above the ankle."<\/p>\n

After the unusual win Poirier claimed he had "felt something" after a check on McGregor, and then later in the fight, the bone must have snapped.<\/p>\n

"He fractured it on one of the checks and then it broke on a punch, for sure," Poirier said.<\/p>\n

There were many unruly verbal exchanges between the fighters before UFC 264, which made victory that little bit sweeter for Poirier.<\/p>\n

"This guy was saying he's going to murder me, [saying] I'm going to leave here in a coffin. I hope this guy gets home safe to his beautiful family," the American told unhappy McGregor fans in Vegas.<\/p>\n

"He did hit me with a good cross, just like the last fight. I didn't see it."<\/p>\n

Poirier also accused McGregor of dodgy tactics in the fight.<\/p>\n

"Takedown was easy. He was putting his fingers in my glove and pulling me down to throw the up-kicks," he said.<\/p>\n

"I was trying to let [referee] Herb [Dean] know that. This guy is a dirtbag.<\/p>\n

"Everybody booing, you can kiss my whole a–hole.<\/p>\n

"Karma is not a b–ch, it's a mirror. I beat the guy."<\/p>\n

McGregor continued to mouth off as Poirier did his post-fight interview and expressed his disappointment in the result.<\/p>\n

"I was boxing the bleeding head off him, kicking the bleeding leg off him," McGregor said.<\/p>\n

"This is not over. If I have to take this on with him outside, I don't give a bollocks."<\/p>\n

"There was no check – not one of them checked," McGregor said defiantly before issuing some more personal trash talk.<\/p>\n

"Your wife is in my DMs!" McGregor yelled at Poirier.<\/p>\n

McGregor appeared highly frustrated with the bizarre ending to the fight.<\/p>\n

"It separated and I bleeding landed on my wonky leg just like Anderson Silva, something similar to that," McGregor said of the moment.<\/p>\n

The former 'champ, champ' had to be stretchered off out of the arena, and continued to shout profanities as he exited.<\/p>\n

UFC president Dana White later confirmed McGregor would undergo surgery on his broken leg in the morning, and also flagged interest in a fourth showdown between the pair, once McGregor had recovered from his injury.<\/p>\n

"The fight didn't get finished. You can't have a fight finish that way," White said in the post-fight press conference.<\/p>\n

"We'll see how this whole thing plays out. Who knows how long Conor is out.<\/p>\n

"Poirier will do his thing till Conor is ready."<\/p>\n
