Wallabies coach Dave Rennie says his side's first Test performance in Brisbane was "substandard" despite it resulting in just the second victory of his tenure.<\/p>\n

A severely understrength France would have won if they had just kicked the ball out after the siren but the combined efforts of Darcy Swain, Taniela Tupou and Tate McDermott helped force the decisive turnover in Australia's 23-21 Houdini act.<\/p>\n

"It was a funny feeling after the game because we were frustrated," a straight-shooting Rennie told reporters after making just one change to his team for Tuesday's second Test in Melbourne.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Kiwi coach was unfazed and largely unaware of external criticism from media and fans.<\/p>\n

"I've never too concerned about reaction outside\u2026 you've got to cop it on the chin, it was a substandard performance," Rennie said.<\/p>\n

"Our speed into contact support has got to be better and we've got to be brutal around that."<\/p>\n

Sunday's squad announcement marks the first time that Rennie has named the same 23 players for back to back Tests.<\/p>\n

"We just think there's more in this group and wanted to give them another crack," REnnie said.<\/p>\n

"Confident that we'll be sharper this time. A lack of accuracy and a lack of continuity affected our ability to put the French under pressure."<\/p>\n

Tupou for Allan Alaalatoa at tighthead prop was the only change to the starting lineup.<\/p>\n

Rennie said Tupou was "outstanding" off the bench at Suncorp Stadium and deserved an opportunity to start, despite Alaalatoa's work ethic being "phenomenal."<\/p>\n

He added that halfback Jake Gordon was disappointed with his first Test performance and that "his core skills weren't as sharp as they normally are."<\/p>\n

"He missed some opportunities to run which is a big part of his game but we've got a lot of confidence in him and he deserves another crack," Rennie said.<\/p>\n

"With tiring defences, Tate is absolutely lethal."<\/p>\n

Five-eighth James O'Connor (groin) had been cleared for selection but Rennie said he was underdone after missing the end of Super Rugby trans-Tasman.<\/p>\n

With such a tight turnaround before Saturday's third Test in Brisbane, the coach added that changes were guaranteed.<\/p>\n

Rennie feels his team is better conditioned than France.<\/p>\n

"At times I thought we were really conservative, kicked ball into touch which only slows the game down and gives them an opportunity to regroup," Rennie said.<\/p>\n

"We did more than enough to win well but we've got to be far more clinical.<\/p>\n

"We want to find grass and kick smart\u2026 be positive in how we kick and look for opportunities."<\/p>\n
