Ash Barty walked off Wimbledon's centre court<\/a> with the Venus Rosewater Dish and the head-spinning moments were just beginning.<\/p>\n

First stop was the honour roll, which had already been updated with her name as the 2021 women's champion after she beat Karolina Pliskova in three sets<\/a>. Miss A. Barty, on the board forever.<\/p>\n

She followed 2019 winner Simona Halep, due to Wimbledon being cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic last year. And it was the first time that she got to see her name alongside her idol and mentor, Evonne Goolagong Cawley<\/a>, as a Wimbledon champion. Throughout the tournament, Barty was wearing a tribute outfit inspired by Goolagong Cawley's apparel from her 1971 win at the All England Club.<\/p>\n

"Evonne texted me at the start of the tournament and said that she hoped it would bring me as much luck as it did for her," Barty told Nine of her fellow Indigenous hero.<\/p>\n

"She's an incredible person. I think just hearing those words from her gave me all the luck that I needed this week and now to share some really incredible history with her for our culture is incredible."<\/p>\n

Barty walked on from the honour roll – followed throughout by the camera, almost like the legendary Goodfellas nightclub entry scene – and who should be waiting but William and Kate.<\/p>\n

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spoke with Barty about her remarkable win, Kate having already seen Barty at the trophy presentation.<\/p>\n

"Yeah, I called my niece and nephew and they were so excited. I know they're up watching now," Barty told Kate, who asked what the time was in Australia; to be told by Barty it was between one and two in the morning.<\/p>\n

William said, "You didn't look like you had any nerves today at all", but Barty assured him that she certainly did. "You hid it very well," William replied.<\/p>\n

"I tried to just hit out instead of going into my shell," Barty said. "Kaja (Pliskova) is incredible, I love playing against her, I love testing myself against her, she genuinely brings out the very best in me."<\/p>\n

Kate added: "I met a little fangirl fan downstairs, she was so sweet. So you're inspiring the next generation … well done. Enjoy your break."<\/p>\n

Barty thanked the royals and moved on … to tennis royalty. Just past a mirrored pole stood the legendary Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova.<\/p>\n

The pair boast a ridiculous 40 Wimbledon titles between them, 20 each; nine in singles for Navratilova and six for King. Barty is now a peer.<\/p>\n

"Everyone's very proud," Navratilova told Barty; somewhat magnanimously, given that Pliskova is a fellow Czech. King added: "We're all proud of you, everyone is. You deserve it."<\/p>\n

Navratilova reminded Barty that with her win, she had joined them as official members of the prestigious All England Club: "It's good to be part of, now you're a member!"<\/p>\n

Barty walked along a hallway, through a members area, and got back to somewhere that suited her far more: with the normal folk. She walked out on the balcony and presented the trophy to the crowd outside Wimbledon's inner confines, to rapturous applause.<\/p>\n

"What an amazing moment," Wimbledon legend Todd Woodbridge said on Nine.<\/p>\n

"This is the public's opportunity to get their photo. Many of these spectators will have been out on the hill watching on the big screen.<\/p>\n

"The hard work's done but there's still plenty of work to go, isn't there, on a day like this in terms of photo ops, media."<\/p>\n

No more with the trophy, though. The precious item was taken away from her by a Wimbledon official after returning inside.<\/p>\n

"I was hoping she'd be able to get it and take it to the team to have a look at it!" Woodbridge said.<\/p>\n

Before heading to her champion's press conference, Barty was met by her team back in the halls, led by head coach Craig Tyzzer and partner Garry Kissick.<\/p>\n

"Hey, how are ya?" Tyzzer asked, to which Barty replied, burying her face in her hands, "Oh my god, that was so embarrassing." It's unclear to what she was referring; perhaps it was simply the magnitude of such a moment, beamed all over the world, truly sinking in. She leant into Kissick's arms.<\/p>\n

Laughs quickly followed, as is the norm with Barty's team. But there were also tears of joy. It was her dream realised, and theirs.<\/p>\n

Perhaps this was where she was told that by rights, she shouldn't have even been playing at Wimbledon. Barty's hip injury, which saw her retire at Roland Garros, should have kept her out of tennis for two months<\/a>; yet here she was with the Wimbledon trophy five weeks later.<\/p>\n

"The emotion just pours out and I think the realisation for Ash," Woodbridge said.<\/p>\n

Barty was not told the whole truth about the extent of her injury until after her final win.<\/p>\n

"Just chatting to my team after I've come off the court, they held a lot of their cards close to their chest and didn't tell me the odds and the information behind my injury," Barty told Nine.<\/p>\n

"Talking to specialists all round the world, they're are a lot of Aussies that had never seen it before. The information we were given, or they were given, it was essentially a two-month injury.<\/p>\n

"So to be able to get through and play pain-free this week has been nothing shy of a miracle really."<\/p>\n

The press conference followed. Barty was her usual self, eloquent yet down to earth. She looked every bit a Wimbledon champion.<\/p>\n

She later thanked all her fans back in Australia, who took the journey with her from the other side of the world.<\/p>\n

"I'm incredibly lucky as an athlete and as a person to get so much love and support from everyone back home," she told Nine.<\/p>\n

"It's endless throughout the whole year. I've always got massive backing and following and I always try and go out there and just do the best I can each and every day."<\/p>\n
