Wednesday's third State of Origin<\/a> match between New South Wales<\/a> and Queensland<\/a> has been moved to the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n

The decision comes after the New South Wales government advised the Australian Rugby League Commission that it would not allow a crowd in Newcastle due to the COVID-19 situation in the state.<\/p>\n

The ARLC held an emergency meeting and decided to move the match to the Gold Coast, where a capacity crowd of 27,000 will be in attendance.<\/p>\n

According to the ARLC, the worsening COVID situation in Sydney meant the NSW government believed a crowd could create an additional risk to the regional community, even though there is currently no community transmission in Newcastle.<\/p>\n

New South Wales recorded 50 new COVID-19 cases today.<\/a> The Sydney metropolitan area, the Central Coast, Blue Mountains, and Wollongong regions remain in lockdown.<\/p>\n

"We are disappointed not to be able to give Newcastle the city's first State of Origin, but we must operate within all State Public Health Orders and not having a crowd in Newcastle negates the opportunity for our fans from the region,'' NRL boss Andrew Abdo said.<\/p>\n

"The Gold Coast has a very low infection rate and both Origin camps are currently located within driving distance of Cbus Stadium. It means neither team will be disadvantaged by travel.<\/p>\n

"This is an exciting outcome for the Gold Coast. It will be the first time in history that the Gold Coast has hosted State of Origin."<\/p>\n

The decision means all three matches of the 2021 series will be played in Queensland, with Townsville having hosted Game One, and Brisbane Game Two.<\/p>\n

New South Wales has already wrapped up the series, taking an unbeatable 2-0 lead.<\/p>\n

"The Gold Coast is an important market for us and in the current circumstances presents a safe outcome for the community and a great outcome for our fans in southeast Queensland," Abdo said.<\/p>\n

"Our priority is ensuring the safety of the community and the continuity of the competition."<\/p>\n
