Just days after confirming Hawthorn great Sam Mitchell will replace four-time premiership-winning coach Alastair Clarkson<\/a> at the end of the 2022 season, the Hawks have been thumped by 62 points by Fremantle.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dockers won every quarter of the match in Launceston, recording their biggest ever win over the Hawks.<\/p>\n

With captain Nat Fyfe celebrating his 200th match, Fremantle moved into seventh spot on the ladder, at least temporarily, with Richmond, GWS and West Coast with a match in hand.<\/p>\n

The Hawks, meanwhile, remain in second last on the ladder, but Clarkson says the events of the previous week<\/a> didn't play a major role in today's capitulation.<\/p>\n

"Based on today's performance you'd say they looked flat, but we've got a young side, we had some injuries and we couldn't win the ball in the middle of the ground," Clarkson said.<\/p>\n

"How much do you link all that? The first six or seven minutes of the game we tackled ferociously as though nothing of the week has been a concern to them.<\/p>\n

"It's difficult to say, we lowered our colours to a pretty good midfield in today's game."<\/p>\n

The Hawks lost Changkuoth Jiath during the match to what appears to be a PCL injury, meaning he's seemingly played his final match of the season.<\/p>\n

Clarkson noted that players who've rushed back from that type of injury run the risk of suffering long-term damage.<\/p>\n

"He's unlikely to play for some time," Clarkson said.<\/p>\n

"We'll probably take a conservative approach with him, and with only six weeks (to go) it would be doubtful he gets back for this year."<\/p>\n
