Adelaide<\/a> has been slammed after a woeful performance saw it record the lowest score in club history in a 63-point loss against Essendon<\/a>. <\/p>\n

After being somewhat controversially handed a rare Friday night fixture, Matthew Nicks' side failed to show up on the big stage as the Bombers ran out 11. 18. (84) to 2. 9. (21) winners<\/a> at Marvel Stadium.<\/p>\n

The performance flew in the face of the competitiveness Adelaide has shown throughout the season, particularly against more fancied opponents, even if talisman Taylor Walker was absent.<\/p>\n

Adelaide's approach with the ball was notably different to previous weeks, with slower ball movement that ultimately played into Essendon's hands as the Crows managed just 31 Inside 50s. The stop-start play led to questions over what Nicks' game plan was.<\/p>\n

"That is as disappointing an outing as we've seen from them in a while," Melbourne great Garry Lyon told Fox Footy. "I expected so much more."<\/p>\n

"A goal in either half from this Adelaide side that pushed Brisbane for three quarters last week is a huge let-down. <\/p>\n

"I ask the question again: what were they trying to achieve from the opening bounce?"<\/p>\n

"They were shell-shocked and they overreacted to something that had been letting them down this season and that was the opposition being able to take a heap of intercept marks," St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt added.<\/p>\n

The dismal performance from Adelaide led to Riewoldt's former teammate Nick Dal Santo calling for the Crows to be given a Friday night football ban for the time being.<\/p>\n

"They had previously been averaging 77 points per game, tonight they had 21, it's not enough and they won't be invited back," he told Fox Footy's First Crack<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"[That's the last prime time TV slot] for a period of time. We understand how valuable the prime time slots are, you get to be seen on a national stage. <\/p>\n

"They didn't put their best foot forward tonight and I think they'll lose multiple opportunities until you can prove that you're up to that standard." <\/p>\n

Adelaide's struggles overshadowed what was a professional performance from Essendon, who snapped a run of two consecutive losses.<\/p>\n

Ben Rutten's side led from siren to siren with stand-in skipper Zach Merrett delivering a best-on-ground performance with 35 disposals, benefitting from a hard tag on midfield running made Darcy Parish (19 disposals).<\/p>\n

First year star Archie Perkins delivered his best performance of the season with three goals and 18 disposals, while Peter Wright was the Bombers' other multiple goal-kicker.<\/p>\n

The win moved Essendon to ninth on the ladder with a clash against the bottom-placed Kangaroos on the horizon in Round 18, while Adelaide will face West Coast at home.<\/p>\n
