Collingwood CEO Mark Anderson has revealed he wasn't aware of Eddie McGuire's plan to step down as club president after the 2021 season before he announced the decision on Monday.<\/a><\/p>\n

McGuire made shocked the AFL community last night at a Collingwood club members forum where he revealed he had been planning for some time to step away at the end of next season.<\/p>\n

Anderson, who took over as the Pies' CEO in 2018, said McGuire's decision came as a genuine "surprise" to him as much as anyone.<\/p>\n

"He told Carla and his two boys and that was it," he said on SEN Breakfast.<\/p>\n

"I was listening to it, like our members, with surprise and shock and just wondering if I was hearing what I was hearing."<\/p>\n

After the forum, Anderson explained he, McGuire and other Collingwood powerbrokers "had a couple of drinks and had a good chance to chat", which is when the reasoning for his decision crystallized.<\/p>\n

"Eddie is as passionate in year 22 as he was in year one – there's absolutely no diminishing of passion. Whenever he wakes up he's thinking about Collingwood. It was very much a personal decision," Anderson said.<\/p>\n

"He felt the time is right – both his boys have now finished school and he's finished up his morning radio duties as well. It's just a different phase of life for him and a personal decision."<\/p>\n

It was an emotional speech from the Pies president, who reflected on his time at the club before confirming the time was right to step away.<\/p>\n

"Back in 1998 it was my time to stand up for our beloved Collingwood, instead of calling on others to do something for our club, they turned my way and I'm proud that I answered," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"I have given everything I have to this position and now it is time for the club going forward, I will stand down at the end of next year and spend the rest of my time as president setting up a new era of Collingwood."<\/p>\n

McGuire said the COVID-19 pandemic and "the change in direction of my media life and the timing of my son's schooling ending, the time was right and future strong for our club for me to make this call".<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
