Paul Vaughan<\/a> is out of a job after his "absolutely stupid" actions, hosting a BBQ during lockdown, but now attention turns to where the former Dragons prop<\/a> will go next.<\/p>\n

The consensus in rugby league circles<\/a> is that Vaughan is almost certainly going to be snapped up by another club, the only question is – where?<\/p>\n

\"Paul<\/p>\n

Vaughan's sacking cost him in the ballpark of $1 million in total<\/a>, although if he can find a deal for 2022, that loss will be reduced.<\/p>\n

Queensland great Billy Slater said Vaughan – as a former Origin and Kangaroos representative – would be an attractive signing for a struggling NRL club, however he had a warning for potential suitors.<\/p>\n

"The only deterrent with signing a guy like Paul Vaughan, especially at a club where you're trying to build culture, is you're trying to build standards and those leadership qualities in your organisation," Slater said on Wide World of Sports' Freddy and The Eighth.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

"So those clubs that are trying to get off the bottom of the ladder, they're looking for players that are coming from good organisations that do the right thing all the time and infect the rest of the squad with those traits.<\/p>\n

\"Paul<\/p>\n

"That would be the only concern with picking up someone like Paul Vaughan that has had these indiscretions that go outside the team and the game's guidelines on a regular occurrence.<\/p>\n

"I think he'll get picked up. I don't think we have the quality of players to choose from. You look at some of the teams at the bottom of the ladder they need quality players.<\/p>\n

"Paul Vaughan is an Origin, representative player and at his best he can add value to a lot of sides. Once the dust settles a club will pick him up."<\/p>\n

Slater said Vaughan and the other 12 Dragons players that were caught having a gathering at Vaughan's house "knew they were doing the wrong thing" and put the game in jeopardy by thinking "they were above" the rules put in place by NSW Health and the NRL amid a recent outbreak of COVID-19 in the state.<\/p>\n

\"Paul<\/p>\n

While he agreed with the penalty the NRL handed Vaughan and his teammates, Slater said it was also an opportunity for the Dragons to get rid of a bad contract.<\/p>\n

"He's had prior indiscretions … but he has found himself on the bench a couple of times this year, he hasn't played his best football and the club have certainly used this incident to get more value," Slater said.<\/p>\n

"He's on a lot of money and he's not playing to that standard and with these indiscretions they've used their right to terminate his contract."<\/p>\n

\"Emotional<\/p>\n

The good news for the club that signs him next however is that his unceremonious exit from the Dragons may have taught him a lesson, according to Immortal, Andrew Johns.<\/p>\n

"I think he's a world class player but I think in this instance he's just made an absolutely stupid, dumb decision," Johns said.<\/p>\n

"I think he'll get picked up, and with certain clauses I think he'd be a really good buy for a club, especially one that's struggling.<\/p>\n

"He's a really good guy, he's just made a stupid, selfish decision and I think he'll really learn from this.<\/p>\n

"Moving forward, talking about captains or leaders, this could really prove his leadership skills. I've always found him to be a really good fella."<\/p>\n
