New Waratahs coach Darren Coleman says he's not the type for long-term rebuilds as he attempts to recreate his Shute Shield magic with the Super Rugby strugglers.<\/p>\n

NSW endured its Annus horribilis in 2021, losing all 13 games as coach Rob Penney was sacked mid-season.<\/p>\n

After giving two Kiwi coaches a shot at the job, the Waratahs have turned to a homegrown product in Coleman, who has led the LA Giltinis to the top of the Major League Rugby standing this season.<\/p>\n

"I remember I took over Gordon and they were dead last, won one game out of 18 and people said it would take years," Coleman told Roz Kelly in an interview that aired on Stan Sport's Rugby Heaven<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n

"It only took two (to win the 2020 Shute Shield title).<\/p>\n

"I'm probably a bit more positive, I'm a glass half full guy.<\/p>\n

"There's no doubt there's some weaknesses in the roster, there's some key positions that if you can get the right person in there, that'll allow some of the other players to play better.<\/p>\n

"I'm not here to take years, I want to get some genuine progression quickly and keep building."<\/p>\n

Coleman, who has signed a three year contract with NSW, said it was "emotional" to return to his home club, where he started his coaching career.<\/p>\n

"I've got that connection with the place, with NSW and my dad was a big supporter of me," the 48-year-old said.<\/p>\n

"He'd be looking down and be pretty proud that I stuck at it and it's turned out well."<\/p>\n

Coleman said his biggest challenge early on would be restoring the confidence of a young playing group and giving fans reason to puff out their chests and wear Waratahs kit around town.<\/p>\n

"Reserve judgment, give us a chance to get on the field next year and win your support back and win your respect," he said.<\/p>\n

"Players and fans alike \u2013 I want people to be able to wear these clothes and have their head held high and proudly say that they're a Waratahs fan."<\/p>\n

The 25-year coach said Waratahs chief executive Paul Doorn had assured him that the club could spend the full salary cap next season after Penney was forced to operate on a shoestring budget this year.<\/p>\n

"We want New South Welshmen where possible, we want New South Welshmen playing for NSW," he said.<\/p>\n

"But it's not a given, if we need a short-term fix for a key position, we may have to do that, just to allow those young players to be able to get the quality of ball they need."<\/p>\n

Coleman is yet to appoint his assistants as he and the club work out whether incumbents Jason Gilmore and Chris Whitaker will be snug fits.<\/p>\n

He ruled out the prospect of Giltinis veterans Matt Giteau, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Dave Dennis following him home to Sydney.<\/p>\n

"Not unless there's wheelchair access to the field," Coleman quipped.<\/p>\n
