Hawthorn great Sam Mitchell will take over the head coaching duties from four-time premiership-winning coach Alastair Clarkson in 2023 as part of a succession plan.<\/p>\n

The decision, announced by Hawthorn today, comes less than 24 hours after it was revealed Mitchell had pulled out of the race to be Collingwood's next senior coach<\/a> amid the Magpies' search for a new man to take over following Nathan Buckley's departure.<\/p>\n

Clarkson is the longest-serving coach in Hawthorn's history after taking over from Peter Schwab in 2005. He's currently under contract for one more year in what will be his 18th season in charge of the Hawks.<\/p>\n

It's understood the decision to have Mitchell, who played 307 games for Hawthorn between 2002-2016 and won four premierships under Clarkson, take on the senior coaching duties in 2023 was reached at a board meeting last month.<\/p>\n

Mitchell, 38, retired at the end of the 2017 season a member of the Eagles. He played 22 games for the club after being traded by Hawthorn to West Coast.<\/p>\n

Following his retirement, Mitchell served as an assistant coach with the Eagles in 2018 and was part of the club's premiership that year, with West Coast defeating Collingwood in the Grand Final<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mitchell returned to Hawthorn in 2019 and most recently has been coaching the Hawks' VFL affiliate, Box Hill. <\/p>\n
