The Cowboys have received a boost ahead of their Friday night clash with the Rabbitohs<\/a> after their coach Todd Payten was released from isolation earlier than expected.<\/p>\n

Payten was last week ordered to self-isolate for 14 days<\/a> after he was deemed a 'close contact' to a positive COVID case.<\/p>\n

However, he has since been reclassified by Queensland Health and is no longer deemed a close contact.<\/p>\n

The NRL<\/a> released a statement confirming the news.<\/p>\n

"The reclassification was made last week, but as an abundance of caution the NRL requested Payten remain in isolation for seven days and return a negative test today," the statement said.<\/p>\n

Cowboys player Griffin Neame, who was also isolating away from the squad, has been allowed to return to the community for the same reason.<\/p>\n

"Neame has also completed seven days isolation as a low risk contact and returned a negative test today," the NRL's statement said.<\/p>\n

"The NRL thanks both Payten and Neame for their compliance, over and above public health orders."<\/p>\n

The news will come as welcome relief to a Cowboys side that was pummelled 38-0 by Newcastle<\/a> while Payten watched from his home on Saturday.<\/p>\n

North Queensland currently sit in 10th place on the ladder but are equal on points with the Sharks and Knights, who sit above them on eighth and ninth.<\/p>\n

They will face a South Sydney side without Origin stars Latrell Mitchell, Jai Arrow and Dane Gagai but that will be balanced out by their own absences, with Valentine Holmes, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and potentially Francis Molo missing due to Queensland duties<\/a>.<\/p>\n
