Outgoing AFL football operations boss Steve Hocking<\/a> has revealed that AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan<\/a> blocked the proposal of a lengthened goal square after it was trialled at the VFL level in 2018.<\/p>\n

After being at the forefront of a number of divisive rule changes over the last few seasons, Hocking announced that he would be leaving his post to become Geelong's next CEO<\/a> in a press conference on Monday.<\/p>\n

While Hocking was able to successfully introduce the 6-6-6 rule as well as the 'stand' on the mark rule, McLachlan prevented him from lengthening the goal square to 18m.<\/p>\n

"He was very strong on that, don't change any of the lines," Hocking said.<\/p>\n

\"Steve<\/p>\n

"He's very strong around the traditions of the game, which I value and have certainly respected.<\/p>\n

"I remember the conversation when I rolled in and said the goal square was going to be double in size; there was a bit of fun between the two of us."<\/p>\n

Hocking will end his tenure as the AFL football boss on Thursday before commencing in his role at Geelong at the end of the season. <\/p>\n

Andrew Dillon will be the AFL's interim football boss for the remainder of the season before a full-time successor to Hocking is appointed.<\/p>\n
