Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> is finally showing signs of getting to grips with his McLaren, after a tremendous recovery drive at the Austrian Grand Prix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Australian driver only managed to qualify 13th but showcased his potent wheel-to-wheel racing ability to climb to as high as fifth, eventually finishing in seventh spot.<\/a><\/p>\n

It's a welcome return to the points for Ricciardo, who finished 13th last week at the Styrian Grand Prix at the same track, after his race was compromised by a power issue early on.<\/p>\n

Although it's a step in a the right direction for the 32-year-old, Austria marked the eighth time in nine races he's finished behind teammate Lando Norris.<\/a><\/p>\n

"I'm trying not to be too low or too high," Ricciardo said after the race about his emotions. "Obviously (qualifying) wasn't great, wasn't fun.<\/p>\n

"I took a lot more enjoyment from the race. It kept me busy the whole time and just had a good start, good restart. Then the defence was tricky, but it was a better day."<\/p>\n

Ricciardo was passed by Carlos Sainz on the very last lap, with the Ferrari able to make the move on much newer tyres.<\/p>\n

"The defence was tough. I was trying everything I could, every trick in the book to stay ahead," he said. "I think I held on as long as I could and Sainz was just a bit quicker at the end with a fresher tyre \u2013 but I can't complain with the race and the result.<\/p>\n

"It's obviously easier to come through a bit more when you start out of position.<\/p>\n

"But in saying that, it's normally a mess deep in the back. Obviously today it went well and last week it went well, but you can also get caught in a mess."<\/p>\n

Qualifying has been Ricciardo's Achilles heel this season, often finding himself buried in the midfield from where it is next to impossible to run a clean race. By contrast, Norris has proved adept at extracting the maximum out of the car over a single lap, to the extent he started from the front row in Austria.<\/p>\n

But one-lap pace won't be so important at the British Grand Prix in a fortnight, with qualifying merely setting the grid for the Saturday sprint race, which will then decide the starting order for Sunday's Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

It's the first time in 71 years Formula One has used a sprint race to decide the grid.<\/p>\n

"That gives me encouragement going into this sprint qualifying we've got in Silverstone, knowing wherever I start that race, I have confidence to start Sunday further up," Ricciardo said.<\/p>\n

The Austrian race marks the end of a triple-header that also included France and last week's race at the Red Bull Ring.<\/p>\n

It was a mostly positive period for Ricciardo, who finished sixth in France and 13th at the Styrian race, a poor result not of his own making.<\/p>\n

"I love staying in that routine but I'm knackered now," Ricciardo said. "Having that three weeks in a row now you're constantly playing catch up and I need a few good nights' sleep.<\/p>\n

"If it's a good race you're watching replays, if it's a bad race you're going through a lot of hypotheticals of what you could have done or what hole you could punch in a wall somewhere.<\/p>\n

"I'm looking forward to just switching off for a few days to reset a little bit."<\/p>\n
