NRL<\/a> head of football Graham Annesley<\/a> has praised Bunker officials for the decision to deny Cronulla a try<\/a> in yesterday's match against Brisbane.<\/a><\/p>\n

On-field referee Ben Cummins had awarded a try to Jesse Ramien despite what most thought was a clear-cut forward pass, only for the Bunker to intervene and overturn the decision.<\/p>\n

The Bunker is not allowed to rule on forward passes, however in this case officials deemed that Sione Katoa had knocked-on as he offloaded the ball to Ramien in the lead-up to the try.<\/p>\n

"There was a fair bit of discussion about the Bunker's involvement in this, and the Bunker supposedly being involved in a decision on a forward pass, which they can't rule on," Annesley said.<\/p>\n

"I can understand how that conclusion was reached.<\/p>\n

"Clearly something looked amiss with that (play), to the casual observer it didn't look right."<\/p>\n

Annesley explained that Katoa had lost control of the ball as he was tackled, and under Law 10, if he didn't regain control, a knock-on was the only possible ruling.<\/p>\n

"He's carrying the ball in his right arm, and as the defenders get to him, his hand and arm come completely away from the ball," he said.<\/p>\n

"He's no longer in control of the ball, he's effectively lost the ball.<\/p>\n

"He could nullify a knock-on by regaining control of the ball, but what he does, his arm comes through and propels the ball and knocks it to Jesse Ramien.<\/p>\n

"He at no stage regathered the ball and decided to pass it. He lost control and then bumped it to Jesse Ramien."<\/p>\n

There was widespread backlash to the call at the time, not because the incorrect decision was made, but because most assumed the knock-on call was a convenient excuse to cover-up an error by the referee who missed a blatant forward pass.<\/p>\n

Premiership winning halfback Cooper Cronk<\/a> called it an "absolute circus" on Fox League, and "the best cover-up I've seen."<\/p>\n

But Annesley praised officials for coming up with exactly the right decision.<\/p>\n

"It's not a forward pass, he at no stage regained control of the ball, that's why the Bunker was fully entitled to get involved and make the decision of a knock on," he said.<\/p>\n

"There was all sorts of talk about the Bunker ruling on forward passes, this was not a pass, it was a lost possession.<\/p>\n

"I congratulate the Bunker for getting involved in that, because at the speed it happened, it looked very different. When you slow it down you can clearly see him lose possession."<\/p>\n
