Israel Folau will make a shock return to rugby after the controversial cross-code star penned a deal with Japan Top League club NTT Communications Shining Arcs on Monday.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old outside back was released by French league club Catalans Dragons last week<\/a> and, with the support of billionaire Clive Palmer, had been preparing to play for the Southport Tigers in the Gold Coast competition.<\/p>\n

But instead he will reignite his rugby career in Ichikawa under former Waratahs coach Rob Penney.<\/p>\n

Folau and Penney's arrivals were announced by the Shining Arcs on Monday<\/a> along with the signings of Australians James Moore, Sam Jeffries and Brody MacAskill as well as former Blues five-eighth Otere Black.<\/p>\n

Folau scored 37 tries in 73 Tests for the Wallabies before his homophobic social media posts in 2019 sent Rugby Australia into a tailspin.<\/p>\n

The deeply religious Folau was sacked by RA in 2019 and eventually received a hefty contract compensation payout following court action.<\/p>\n
