Matthew Lloyd says Port Adelaide star Ollie Wines<\/a> looms as Marcus Bontempelli<\/a>'s biggest challenger for the Brownlow Medal after a scintillating performance against Hawthorn. <\/p>\n

Wines tallied a remarkable 43 disposals to go along with 13 clearances in Port's win over Hawthorn, continuing a prolific 2021 season which has seen him average a career-best 32.5 disposals per game in 15 appearances.<\/p>\n

While the Bulldogs skipper Bontempelli is the overwhelming favourite to take out the prestigious Brownlow, Lloyd suggested that Wines could come close.<\/p>\n

"I know the favourite for the Brownlow is Marcus Bontempelli, but this man will go extremely close," he told Nine's AFL Sunday Footy Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"He's just getting best-on-grounds week after week and I'm not sure who will take votes off him with the way he's playing. <\/p>\n

\"Ollie<\/p>\n

"He had 43 disposals, 13 clearances and just gets the job done week-in, week-out."<\/p>\n

Wines' resurgence in 2021 comes after his future at the club was in doubt just 18 months ago, with a number of Victorian clubs sniffing around the Echuca native's situation, before he re-signed with Port Adelaide<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The star midfielder was awarded the co-captaincy alongside current skipper Tom Jonas in 2019, before being demoted just a year later as Jonas assumed the sole responsibility of the role.<\/p>\n

"It's great story because he had the injury stuff, then he had the captaincy taken off him by Jonas," Port great Kane Corne said.<\/p>\n

"There was talk of [leaving to join] Carlton because he's really close to his family in Victoria. <\/p>\n

"Yeah he did [play SANFL last year] but he's signed a six-year deal now so he's going to be around for a long time."<\/p>\n
