In front of a raucous home crowd of 13,840 at Suncorp Stadium, the Brisbane Broncos ended their four-game losing streak in style, beating Cronulla 26-18<\/a> in a thriller for just their fourth win of the 2021 NRL season.<\/p>\n

Kevin Walters was all smiles in the coach's box post-game, giving the thumbs-up to fans after an encouraging display from the struggling team in the first day-time home game of the year for the Broncos.<\/p>\n

The victory also marked the first for Brisbane since bringing on former Broncos star Ben Ikin as the club's new Football and Performance Director.<\/p>\n

After Canterbury's humiliating 66-0 loss against Manly on Saturday, Brisbane's triumph lifts them from the bottom of the NRL ladder.<\/p>\n

"I'm just really happy for these guys, who have been under a lot of pressure for most of the year," Walters said after the win.<\/p>\n

"We had a great preparation coming back and we've reset.<\/p>\n

"I thought every bit of our game today improved, but are we where we need to be? No, but certainly some really big improvements across all levels of our game.<\/p>\n

"Today was a big game for our club moving forward."<\/p>\n

Kotoni Staggs made an impressive return for the Broncos, and flanked by fellow rising stars Tesi Niu and Payne Haas, there was a taste of a bright future to come for the battling club. Niu, 19, had two tries, with Ethan Bullemor, Jesse Arthars and veteran Alex Glenn also crossing the try-line on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Walters was excited by what he saw from Niu in particular.<\/p>\n

"He's one of those guys who has the ability to do what he does on the field," Walters said.<\/p>\n

"Today, he really did show what sort of player he is and it's up to Tesi to continually back that up.<\/p>\n

"It's tough in the NRL but today I thought he had his best performance that we've seen from him."<\/p>\n

While Brisbane celebrated the spoils of being back in the winner's circle, the Bunker was a talking point once again<\/a> after a try awarded to Cronulla's Jesse Ramien was overturned in unusual circumstances.<\/p>\n

The Bunker has never been able to rule on forward passes, but that's exactly what appeared to happen on the surface.<\/p>\n

"After juggling the ball it has gone forward off the ground. We have a decision," the video referee was heard saying, making it unclear if a knock-on or forward pass was the ruling.<\/p>\n

\"Bunker<\/p>\n

Despite a huge backlash on social media by fans blowing up at the Bunker's call, Cooper Cronk explained that the referees were correct, but it was a "cover up" for their earlier error.<\/a><\/p>\n

"It was an absolute circus because that was a forward pass every day of the week and twice on Sunday, because the officials missed it," Cronk said on Fox Sports.<\/p>\n

"They awarded the try and then the Bunker came into play. That's the best cover-up I've ever seen in a long, long time.<\/p>\n

"The letter of the law is once you lose control of the ball and you propel it on, it's called a juggle, basically a forward pass. You need to hold onto possession, regrip to make a pass.<\/p>\n

"So the Bunker and the referees have actually got it right, but Bunker interfered to make sure they got the call right. It was a real circus, a real mix-up, they stuffed that one up."<\/p>\n
