After finishing 13th in qualifying at the Austrian Grand Prix<\/a>, Daniel Ricciardo was at a loss to explain why he was struggling, while teammate Lando Norris was able to take second spot on the grid in the McLaren.<\/p>\n

Red Bull's championship leader Max Verstappen took pole for the third-straight time,<\/a> putting him in prime position to extend his lead over Lewis Hamilton in the standings.<\/p>\n

But Ricciardo, who has had a horror season since arriving from Renault, again had issues in the McLaren after being knocked out in Q2. To add salt to the wound he had to watch Norris produce a much better result out of the same car.<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately, a similar result to last week. It did feel better, but it's just not translating into lap-time," a dejected Ricciardo said after qualifying.<\/p>\n

"In Q1, I was pretty happy with the laps. I felt like I'd done quite well but I was still half a second off. So, it's a bit of a head-scratch.<\/p>\n

"I don't really know where else to get the extra speed from at the moment, so I'll keep chipping away.<\/p>\n

"When you make a lap and you're a tenth (of a second off), two, it's one thing, but when we're talking about five, six tenths, it's harder to understand where you can find that kind of lap.<\/p>\n

"I've certainly been better. But it's OK. I'm definitely not going to let the sport get me down, because it can't become something repetitive."<\/p>\n

Ricciardo snapped back at suggestions he should consult Norris for advice on how to get the most out of the McLaren.<\/p>\n

"Drivers don't do that. Each to their own," he said.<\/p>\n

"In debriefs, information is shared about how we feel about the car, but no, everyone has got their own way to drive and their own little things they'll keep for themselves so that is just how this sport is and that is OK. I am completely OK with that.<\/p>\n

"I feel like I am pushing the car and driving on the edge and it is just not translating into lap time at the moment.<\/p>\n

"I can't take a second off the car. I don't know \u2026 I congratulated him, but I don't know how to take time like that. That's the truth."<\/p>\n

It was Norris, and not Hamilton, who almost caught Verstappen at the Austrian Grand Prix, placing just .05 seconds behind him.<\/p>\n

"I feel epic," the jubilant Norris shouted on team radio after his best qualifying result. "Probably one of the best laps I've done."<\/p>\n

In clinching the first of his three career podiums on the same track last year, Norris became the youngest British driver on a podium and third-youngest overall behind Lance Stroll and Verstappen.<\/p>\n

The ultra-consistent Norris is the only driver to have scored points in all eight races so far. But he is cautious about his chances of challenging Red Bull and Mercedes for a first victory.<\/p>\n

"We're not as quick as them and a lot of things are not possible compared to them," he said. "But we maximised our potential."<\/p>\n
