Rugby league legend Greg Inglis<\/a> has been released from his playing contract with Super League club the Warrington Wolves<\/a> due to injury, effective immediately.<\/p>\n

The former Storm and Rabbitohs superstar in May suffered a hamstring injury in Warrington's clash with the Huddersfield Giants – and it's proven to be worse than initially thought.<\/p>\n

That's led to the Wolves and Inglis parting ways in a mutual agreement, although the 34-year-old is remaining at the club in a voluntary mentoring role for the rest of the season.<\/p>\n

The departure means Inglis played just three games with Warrington, after surprising the rugby league world when he emerged from retirement to sign with the Wolves last year.<\/p>\n

Inglis is grateful for the chance to play in the Super League.<\/p>\n

"It's unfortunate that it's come to this but the injury is worse than we originally thought," Inglis said.<\/p>\n

"Not too many people get the opportunity and the experience to come over here to the UK and play in Super League, especially at my age, and I want to thank Warrington for the opportunity."<\/p>\n

Wolves chief executive Karl Fitzpatrick lauded the impact of Inglis in a short period of time.<\/p>\n

"Although we would have liked to have seen Greg in action more, he has brought tremendous value to our organisation with his leadership qualities and in driving club standards," Fitzpatrick said.<\/p>\n

"It's testament to his character that he wishes to remain in Warrington until the end of the season to continue to support the playing group and to mentor a number of our young players."<\/p>\n

Inglis retired from the NRL in 2019 as one of the most destructive attacking weapons the game had seen.<\/p>\n

The Indigenous Australian hero played 177 NRL games with Melbourne and 146 matches at South Sydney between 2005 and 2019.<\/p>\n

He also represented Australia in 39 Tests and Queensland in 32 State of Origin games, tormenting the Blues in the Maroons' famous eight-year winning streak.<\/p>\n
