After Richmond's stunning 10-point loss to the Gold Coast Suns<\/a> last night, AFL commentator Kane Cornes has his out at "arrogant" coach Damien Hardwick.<\/p>\n

The 2020 Premiership winners suffered the shock defeat at Marvel Stadium in front of just 9,327 fans. Cornes believes that Hardwick's comments earlier in the year that he "hates" the venue, put off their supporters from cheering on the team, and also had an effect on the mindset of players for the Suns clash.<\/p>\n

"I think it was a big, arrogant mistake\u2026 the way that they spoke about Marvel this year," Cornes told SEN.<\/em><\/p>\n

"No doubt the AFL got into the ear of Damien Hardwick and the Richmond hierarchy because quickly after they backed away pretty significantly from those comments.<\/p>\n

\"Richmond<\/p>\n

"But the coach and the club \u2013 particularly the coach \u2013 sets the mood and the attitude of his players.<\/p>\n

"Every time they speak publicly, you've got to be really careful because the players are listening, and it does filter through the group and the fans."<\/p>\n

With one of the largest fanbases in AFL, even with crowds capped at 25,000 in Melbourne this weekend due to COVID-19 concerns, the attendance was a let down.<\/p>\n

"No wonder they (fans) don't turn up," Cornes said.<\/p>\n

"It's no wonder the players don't look like they want to play there, which is amazing considering where football was outside of Victoria at this time last year.<\/p>\n

"It should have been a blessing to play at Marvel and not have to jump on a plane."<\/p>\n

Richmond next play Collingwood on July 10 in a blockbuster match at a venue yet to be confirmed and their place in the top-eight on the line.<\/p>\n
