{"id":92077,"date":"2021-06-28T03:48:46","date_gmt":"2021-06-28T03:48:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=92077"},"modified":"2021-06-28T13:59:52","modified_gmt":"2021-06-28T13:59:52","slug":"olympians-set-up-claim-over-us-flag-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=92077","title":{"rendered":"Olympian&#039;s &#039;set up&#039; claim over US flag protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Outspoken American hammer throw star Gwen Berry has claimed she was &quot;set up&quot; after controversially turning her back on the American flag while standing on the medal podium at the US Olympic trials.<\/p>\n<p>Berry, 31, qualified for her second Olympics with a bronze medal finish, but said she was &quot;pissed&quot; the US anthem played while she was standing on the dais.<\/p>\n<p>At the US trials the anthem is not played like it is at the Olympic Games, instead it is played once a day at a set time. On the day in question, it was scheduled to play at 5.20pm, but eventually played at 5.25pm, five minutes later than planned.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MzBerryThrows\/status\/1409213201967849480\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"embed-social embed-twitter\" data-show-caption=\"false\" data-conversation=\"none\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/MzBerryThrows\/status\/1409213201967849480<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Berry later explained why she turned away and held up a shirt with the slogan &quot;Activist Athlete&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I feel like it was a set-up, and they did it on purpose,&quot; Berry said about the anthem&#x27;s curious timing during the medal ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I was pissed, to be honest.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;They had enough opportunities to play the national anthem before we got up there.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I was thinking about what I should do. Eventually I stayed there and I swayed, I put my shirt over my head. The anthem doesn&#x27;t speak for me. It never has.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;My purpose and my mission is bigger than sports,&quot; Berry added.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#x27;m here to represent those&#8230; who died due to systemic racism. That&#x27;s the important part. That&#x27;s why I&#x27;m going.
