The FIA has warned Red Bull that another Max Verstappen burnout "would not be tolerated in the future", after the championship-leading Dutchman celebrated his Styrian Grand Prix<\/a> victory in controversial scenes.<\/p>\n

Verstappen secured Red Bull's fourth consecutive Grand Prix victory in a top-class performance in the Austrian Alps, starting on pole and finishing 35 seconds clear of Mercedes title rival Lewis Hamilton.<\/p>\n

The seventh-round win extended Verstappen's lead over Hamilton to 18 points and put the Briton in grave danger of missing out on a title for just the second time in eight years.<\/p>\n

But amid the jubilation of the Red Bull crew, the FIA took exception to Verstappen's choice of celebration when the 23-year-old slowed down by his team on the pitwall, before performing a burnout that left tyre tracks on the circuit as he took the chequered flag.<\/p>\n

While there's no issue with burnout marks being left on the track, Formula 1 race director Michael Masi was displeased at where the burnout was performed.<\/p>\n

Verstappen was deemed to have wheeled out his colourful antics too close to the finish line, which on another day may have put drivers that followed at risk of an accident.<\/p>\n

Masi revealed shortly after the incident that he had already assessed the matter.<\/p>\n

"Yes I did, as soon as it happened," Masi said.<\/p>\n

"It was not an ideal situation, which is why I spoke to the team immediately and told them accordingly, that it's something that would not be tolerated in the future."<\/p>\n

Article 43.3 of the FIA's sporting regulations states than any driver celebrations must be undertaken within strict limits.<\/p>\n

The winner is permitted to celebrate before reaching the parc ferm\u00e9 provided it:<\/p>\n

a) is performed safely and does not endanger other drivers or any officials<\/p>\n

b) does not call into question the legality of his car<\/p>\n

c) does not delay the podium ceremony<\/p>\n

The 2021 championship will resume at the same venue, Red Bull Ring, next weekend.<\/p>\n
