Australian Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> has made a bombshell admission that given another chance, he might not have chosen his career path in motorsport<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ricciardo revealed a surprising regret as he reflected on his 2014 Australian Grand Prix disqualification<\/a> while at Red Bull, lamenting the nature of the sport where something out of his control cost him a historic podium finish at the race.<\/p>\n

"It was the first race of the hybrid era of V6 engines and electric motors and it was a new system and I don't think we calibrated it correctly or something, so that one kind of sucked," Ricciardo said on the Pardon My Take<\/em> podcast of his debut race for Red Bull.<\/p>\n

"That's one thing with our sport… as much as I love it and I've obviously made a career out of it, if I could do it all again, I don't know if I would pick this sport, because there's so many other variables and so much out of your control.<\/p>\n

"You could perform perfectly and something might end it for you. But I think then that makes the highs so high.<\/p>\n

"When it all does work and gel together and you win or get a podium, it's huge."<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old said he got into motorsport because he "sucked at everything else" but "was always very outdoors and active and couldn't really sit still in the classroom".<\/p>\n

"My parents knew I would do something with pace and energy. My dad raced a little bit, more recreational when he was a bit older, so he grew up around it and was quite passionate, so I think it was quite easy for me to say 'well I've got it in my blood thanks to dad'," Ricciardo said.<\/p>\n

"I was, I think, nine years old and was practically begging, just like, 'Can I please try this out because it makes me more happy than doing anything else'. Mum was hesitant because I guess it's a bit dangerous to be in a go-kart doing 60mph at nine years old and I think Dad was a little bit like, 'Well this is now going cost me a fortune so we don't really want you to do this'… but they were great.<\/p>\n

"They knew it was going to make me happy and they supported that, so very lucky for sure."<\/p>\n

Ricciardo, now at McLaren<\/a> after a two-year stint at Renault following five strong years at Red Bull, also opened up about the aspects of F1 which baffle some casual fans, such as teams celebrating a finish in the top 10.<\/p>\n

"I've probably been that guy before," Ricciardo, who has been faced with this situation at Renault and McLaren<\/a>, said.<\/p>\n

"The reason for it is pretty simple. Most seasons, only maybe two or three teams could win a race, just because their car, they've done such a good job and no-one else is really on that level.<\/p>\n

"For other teams maybe a seventh place is the equivalent of a victory. You can get that satisfaction, and as a driver, if you've been doing it your whole life, you know if you've gotten every little last bit out of that race, and if it leads to a result like that, then it is worth celebrating. It's certainly not a victory, but it's certainly recognised as a big result."<\/p>\n

Ricciardo said despite battling for rare podium finishes in recent years, he didn't regret leaving Red Bull, where he was a consistent podium contender.<\/p>\n

"The Red Bull – Renault thing… at the time, a lot of people couldn't really understand it, and fair enough, because I was going from a second-best, third-best team at the time to the fourth or fifth-best team, so I was downgrading if you want to call it that from a performance point of view," the West Australian said.<\/p>\n

"But I felt like at Red Bull I kind of want to say I had reached my limit. I'd been with the team so long, I had known everyone so well, I was like, 'I'm not sure I'm going to put anymore effort into this if I keep going'. It doesn't really sound right but basically I was worried I'd get complacent, just seeing the same people everyday.<\/p>\n

"So I wanted a new challenge for myself and I also felt like Renault was on the come-up, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to jump ship and bring it to the top."<\/p>\n
