The Broncos won't sack coach Kevin Walters<\/a> this year, board member Darren Lockyer insists, denying that Brisbane erred by appointing the club icon.<\/p>\n

Walters is under fire just 15 games into a two-year contract, with Brisbane running last in the NRL. Players are reportedly disgruntled<\/a> with his leadership and a second consecutive wooden spoon is a distinct possibility.<\/p>\n

But Lockyer told Wide World of Sports that his former premiership teammate wouldn't face any immediate threat of being axed.<\/p>\n

"No, I don't think that's a scenario," Lockyer said on QLDER<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"A lot of coaches come in, they have different views to the previous coach, so the roster is obviously one thing that changes. The club's got [Rabbitohs halfback] Adam Reynolds coming [next season].<\/p>\n

"Kevvy's been talking a lot in the media about the changing of the roster and I think until he gets the players and the roster that he's been trying to secure at the club, I think that's when you sort of start to really judge his coaching capabilities."<\/p>\n

Lockyer denied that signing Walters was a mistake, saying that the Broncos had gone back to a coach with the club's DNA; given that 'Kevvy' was a five-time premiership-winning player at Brisbane. Walters beat<\/a> title-winning former Cowboys coach Paul Green to the role.<\/p>\n

Lockyer said that the club was working to put a support network around Walters; with new CEO Dave Donaghy having sacked two staffers<\/a> and signed Ben Ikin<\/a> as the new head of football.<\/p>\n

"In the pursuit of the club looking to get Craig Bellamy there and the fallout with Wayne [Bennett], and then we chose a different direction, we went away from our DNA with Anthony Seibold; he worked extremely hard at his job there and it obviously didn't work out…" Lockyer said.<\/p>\n

"So we've gone back to our DNA with Kevvy Walters and at the moment, it's a bit of a rough ride. But as I said, there is going to be some changes made both from a football club department, which Dave's implementing now, and then obviously the roster is the other key factor.<\/p>\n

"There will be some signings coming and that will give, I guess, Kevvy a lot more confidence about where he's heading next year."<\/p>\n

Walters has denied<\/a> that he has lost the Brisbane dressing room, though he cut a shattered figure<\/a> after a 46-0 loss to South Sydney last Thursday.<\/p>\n

On top of the poor results, Queensland's selection of Reece Walsh had put the spotlight firmly on Brisbane's release of the gun fullback to the Warriors earlier this season.<\/p>\n

Walters said that he wanted to play Walsh for more games in Queensland Cup before giving him a shot at the NRL; yet at New Zealand, the 18-year-old has produced such amazing form that he will make his State of Origin debut on Sunday after just seven first grade matches.<\/p>\n
