Joel Selwood has been on the receiving end of a tonne of criticism this week after two controversial incidents in Geelong's win over the Bulldogs<\/a>, but Kane Cornes has urged AFL critics to lay off the Cats veteran.<\/p>\n

During the game, Selwood was caught making contact with Bailey Dale's face and eye while the defender was on the ground<\/a>, and was also involved in another incident where he appeared to step on Taylor Duryea's leg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Selwood was able to avoid a ban from the MRO, but was hit with a combined $3000 fine for the two incidents<\/a>, in addition to being heavily criticised for his questionable actions.<\/p>\n

But Cornes was not pleased with the flak the Cats skipper received because, in the Port Adelaide legend's opinion, he's done more good than bad for AFL.<\/p>\n

"I don't like the Joel Selwood smashing," Cornes said on SEN SA Breakfast<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"Admittedly, Joel Selwood is my favourite player in the game.<\/p>\n

"I watch this guy play every week, he has milked and scratched and extracted every bit of god-given talent out of his body more so than any other AFL player in history.<\/p>\n

"He has played 323 games. He wins 73 percent of the games he plays. It is one of the best win-loss ratio records ever. He's won 236 games and lost 86.<\/p>\n

\"Joel<\/p>\n

"Seven out of 10 Mondays, he walks into the Geelong facility a winner. He knows the Cats' song extremely well.<\/p>\n

"For those saying that he milks free kicks, he's had more tackles than any player in history.<\/p>\n

"He's had more wins at Kardinia Park than any player in history.<\/p>\n

\"Selwood<\/p>\n

"I think he's been one of the more inspirational leaders that the game has ever seen. I've got him right up there in terms of the great captains ever.<\/p>\n

"I would have loved to have played for Joel Selwood."<\/p>\n

Cornes admitted that Selwood "got it wrong" with his actions against the Bulldogs, but argued that didn't mean he deserved the level of criticism directed at him, often due to accusations of him "milking" free kicks.<\/p>\n

"Get your hands away from the face," Cornes said.<\/p>\n

"Across 16 seasons and 323 games, the umpires give him a free kick, so what? He has been smart enough to find a loophole in the rules where he's got a technique that allows him to win more free kicks than anyone.<\/p>\n

"Would I have done that if I could have? Absolutely I would have.<\/p>\n

"I think he's been a terrific ambassador for the sport. I think he's been one of the great captains and I think the coach sticking up for him is what makes good footy clubs."<\/p>\n

Selwood has been instrumental in Geelong's success over the years, and this season they are preparing for another strong finals campaign, with a 10-3 win-loss record putting them firmly in contention for the flag.<\/p>\n

Geelong currently sit third on the AFL ladder and will this week face the Lions in Brisbane.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
