McLaren driver Lando Norris was left seething when Pierre Gasly forced him off the track at the French Grand Prix<\/a>, but his AlphaTauri rival has defended the move.<\/p>\n

When Norris made a short-lived overtake of Gasly on lap 28 of Circuit Paul Ricard<\/a>, the Frenchman went to such great lengths to defend that he ran off the track, pushing the Briton into a run-off.<\/p>\n

Norris remains infuriated despite the fact that he zipped past Gasly a lap later and eventually sewed up a fifth-placed finish, crossing the line 11 seconds clear of McLaren teammate Daniel Ricciardo.<\/p>\n

"He forced me off!" Norris screamed on team radio.<\/p>\n

"What's this idiot doing? He even went off himself."<\/p>\n

Norris, the only driver in the 2021 championship to have collected points in all seven rounds, then doubled down in a post-match interview on F1 TV.<\/p>\n

"The fact that he ended up off the track as well was like the bad bit of it. I think what he tried to do was okay; if he stayed on the track, fair play," Norris said.<\/p>\n

"But the fact he throttled so much to squeeze me off, and then he went off as well, was like a bit of a harsh move."<\/p>\n

Gasly, who a fortnight ago scored his first podium finish of the season in Azerbaijan before taking out seventh in France, said in cutting Norris off that he was just racing competitively.<\/p>\n

"I'm sure (he complained)! It was hard racing but I really enjoyed it. You can't expect to go around the outside and the guy not to fight," Gasly told F1 TV.<\/p>\n

"I tried to keep it clean, it's a very difficult corner, very long, on the edge of the grip.<\/p>\n

"Also a tailwind, so it was difficult to keep the car on the track.<\/p>\n

"I haven't seen the footage, I'll look at the footage to see if it was too much or not. But everyone likes a bit of racing.<\/p>\n

"I was on the kerb on the exit, I tried to keep it clean, I'm a fair racer.<\/p>\n

"In the end, I'm pleased. The next lap we fought again. It's racing."<\/p>\n

Red Bull's Max Verstappen extended his championship lead over Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton to 12 points in pulling off a late overtake of the seven-time world champion in the south of France.<\/p>\n

The Dutchman's Red Bull team executed a two-stop strategy in the seventh round of the season and it paid off perfectly, the 23-year-old pushing ahead of Hamilton on the penultimate lap as the Englishman battled on decimated tyres.<\/p>\n

The championship is now set to reach Austria's Red Bull Ring on Sunday.<\/p>\n
