Rugby league legend Andrew Johns has shot down the head coaching credentials of recently retired Rooster Boyd Cordner<\/a>, suggesting the 29-year-old would be better suited for an assistant gig or a role in leadership.<\/p>\n

Being a former long-term skipper of the Roosters, NSW and Australia suggests a shift into head coaching is a reasonable career move, but Johns says he doesn't see Cordner as "that sort of person".<\/p>\n

"I spoke to him about (retirement); he said he's just going to sit back and put his feet up and take a breath and then see where he goes from there," Johns said on Wide World of Sports' Immortal Behaviour<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

"But he's the sort of guy that I don't think the Roosters would want him out of the system. (They'd want him) somewhere involved, doing some assistant coaching or whatever.<\/p>\n

"I just don't see (him as a head coach). I don't see him as that sort of person.<\/p>\n

"I think he'd be a great sort of guy working in leadership within a club.<\/p>\n

"Very smart about how he can educate back-rowers … and the sort of guy that when he speaks they listen.<\/p>\n

"But I don't see him as a head coach."<\/p>\n

Cordner's farewell press conference, held at the SCG, was an incredibly emotional retirement announcement.<\/p>\n

A flood of admirers from many walks of the rugby league world were in attendance, including Brad Fittler, Anthony Minichiello, Mitchell Pearce, Todd Carney and Wade Graham, as Cordner fought through tears just days after turning 29.<\/p>\n

"Everyone loves him, everyone loves Boydo, no one's got a bad word to say about him, everyone respects the way he played and the way he carried himself off the field," Johns said.<\/p>\n

"A true legend."<\/p>\n
