Pop star Cody Simpson<\/a>'s Tokyo Games dream is over after the Gold Coast pin-up boy finished last in tonight's men's 100-metre butterfly final at the Australian Olympic swimming trials.<\/p>\n

The final was claimed by Matt Temple in an Australian record, the 21-year-old posting 50.45 seconds to eclipse the 50.85 seconds registered by Andrew Lauterstein in 2009. David Morgan will join Temple on the Australian Olympic team for the 100-metre butterfly after finishing second in 51.67.<\/p>\n

While Simpson<\/a> has gone without a ticket to Tokyo, the 24-year-old's extraordinary pursuit of Olympic selection cannot be underestimated.<\/p>\n

In December, he swam a personal best of 54.9 seconds to qualify for the trials, before lowering to 53.85 seconds in February. And on the last day of the trials, he's swum another personal best of 52.84 in his heat and 52.94 in the final, a time that placed him eighth. The fact he qualified for the final took many experts and fans by surprise, too.<\/p>\n

"I feel good. It was my goal to come out and make the final today. It's what I did. Happy to be here nonetheless," Simpson said in a pool-side interview on Amazon's coverage after his race.<\/p>\n

"Fifty-two (seconds) was my phone background for the last six months. I wanted to go that time and to do it twice today is super encouraging.<\/p>\n

"I'm just looking forward now to getting back to training and keeping on going."<\/p>\n

Simpson has always insisted that Paris 2024 is his major aim – and Australia is now watching on as he continues to build toward those Games.<\/p>\n
