Australian captain Tim Paine<\/a> maintains coach Justin Langer<\/a> retains the full support of the players, despite recent reports of dissatisfaction with his methods.<\/p>\n

In the wake of Australia's series loss to India<\/a> last summer, unnamed sources went public with their frustrations, with suggestions Langer's style was wearing thin with the players.<\/a><\/p>\n

Langer's disciplinarian methods and supposed mood swings were two of the criticisms levelled at the coach, with suggestions some players were more comfortable approaching assistant coach Andrew McDonald.<\/p>\n

Speaking in Brisbane, Paine dismissed suggestions Langer was offside with the players.<\/p>\n

"We are all 100 per cent behind JL and the job he is doing," Paine said. "We had a team review at the end of the Indian series, which is a pretty common factor in professional sports. From Justin to our last player, everyone will get feedback they can improve on.<\/p>\n

"We will go to the Gold Coast in a couple of weeks to delve a bit deeper into that\u2026 we are trying to create an environment to give people feedback. We obviously did not play as well as we (would have) liked against India and we all want to improve, from Justin down."<\/p>\n

Last year an Amazon Prime documentary, The Test,<\/em> revealed a heated exchange between Langer and batsman Usman Khawaja<\/a> in the lead-up to a Test against Pakistan in 2018.<\/p>\n

Former Australia skipper Mark Taylor<\/a> explained that while Langer might have a reputation as a disciplinarian, that shouldn't be seen as a problem.<\/p>\n

"What you actually want as a coach is not to be the best friend of the players, you've got to be a mentor, and a good mentor doesn't always tell you what you want to hear," Taylor told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"A good mentor will tell you what you need to hear, and that's sometimes very different from what you want to hear."<\/p>\n

The exchange between Khawaja<\/a> and Langer contained a telling line, with the batsman explaining that he was worried about 'harping too much on negatives'.<\/p>\n

Taylor noted the explosion in the size of the backroom staff in recent years, across all sports, and explained that the amount of money in the game often prevents support staff from telling players a few home truths.<\/p>\n

"It's the problem of modern day sport, male or female, and not just cricket," he said.<\/p>\n

"In this professional era, players will surround themselves with people they're comfortable with, and if you're well paid, your support staff are also well paid.<\/p>\n

"You get to the stage where the support staff feel it's not in their best interests to tell the players a few home truths about where they're at.<\/p>\n

"This can be a great problem. If you surround yourself with people who just tell you what you want to hear, you won't get any better. You'll keep making the same mistakes."<\/p>\n
