League Immortal Andrew Johns has urged Canberra's Curtis Scott<\/a> to consider his options next time he drinks alcohol, after the Canberra star was stood down following a fight at a nightclub.<\/a><\/p>\n

Speaking on his Wide World of Sports show Immortal Behaviour<\/em><\/a>, Johns said NRL players need to be in a "safe" place if they're going to put themselves in vulnerable situations.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old is in his second season at the Raiders, having joined the club from Melbourne.<\/p>\n

"It's up to Curtis if he feels like he needs to stop drinking altogether. He's a grown man, and all those cliches, you have to learn from your mistakes and all that sort of stuff," he said.<\/p>\n

"But, if you're going to have a beer, just have one at home or have one at your mate's place. You go out now everyone has got phones, and people can have a shot at you.<\/p>\n

"Obviously with alcohol he can react. I don't know what's happened, I haven't even seen the footage but my recommendation to Curtis is if you're going to have a drink and get on it, stay at home or stay at a mate's place where you are safe and nothing is going to get out."<\/p>\n

The incident with Scott occurred after a patron approached him about the club's recent poor performances. The centre failed to immediately report the incident to the club.<\/p>\n

Johns is the first to admit he wasn't perfect during his own career in relation to his consumption of alcohol.<\/p>\n

But times have changed, with every mobile phone doubling as a camera, and social media ready to highlight every indiscretion.<\/p>\n

Johns says his body welcomed the periods when he wasn't drinking.<\/p>\n

"I used to have extended times (not drinking). Leading into finals. During off-season. Origin time," he explained.<\/p>\n

"There was one series where I didn't have a drink at all. I used to have periods during the season where I didn't (drink). Sometimes I'd go two, three weeks, a month. During the Origin period it was a month and a half.<\/p>\n

"You're clearer and on Mondays you haven't got that paranoia. Physically for your body, the recovery when you're not drinking … when you're on the tear, you're out there eating rubbish. You're not getting your sleep."<\/p>\n

Johns noted it was hard for young men to ignore the same temptations their friends were able to enjoy simply because they weren't NRL players.<\/p>\n

"A lot of these guys are in their early 20s, it was a hard thing for me to do at that age, being told what I gotta do and how I've got to behave," he said.<\/p>\n

"All my mates are going out having a good time, (but) just because I play footy well doesn't mean I have to be different.<\/p>\n

"It can be tough."<\/p>\n
