Brett Morris<\/a> has confirmed his retirement from rugby league, a month after a knee injury ended his 2021 season.<\/a><\/p>\n

The 34-year-old has announced he's bringing the curtain down on a career that saw him play 276 first grade games, as well as 15 State of Origin matches and 18 Tests for Australia.<\/p>\n

He was a member of St George Illawarra's drought-breaking premiership-winning side in 2010, as well as the Roosters side that won the competition in 2019.<\/p>\n

The winger suffered a torn ACL in the final minutes of the Roosters win over Newcastle in Round Eight.<\/p>\n

"Not everybody gets to go out on their own terms, but looking back over my career, I've been incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunities I've had, and I hang up the boots a very proud and content man, knowing that the time is right," said Morris.<\/p>\n

"There are many people who have played an important role in helping me in my career throughout the years, and I'd like to extend my thanks to them all, right back to my junior club the Kiama Knights.<\/p>\n

"In the NRL, I've been fortunate to be coached by and to play with some of the game's best, and I'm grateful to all the coaches and teammates I've had over the years.<\/p>\n

"More recently, it's been an honour to wear the Sydney Roosters jersey and I will always be proud to have captained the side in what was my final match."<\/p>\n

Morris scored 176 premiership tries in his career, fourth all-time behind Ken Irvine, Billy Slater and Steve Menzies.<\/p>\n

Despite his age, Morris ended his career at the peak of his powers.<\/a><\/p>\n

"When players do finish, not a lot actually go out playing their best football," Eels great Peter Sterling said on Nine's The Sunday Footy Show<\/em>. "He's in career-best form. His last couple of seasons have been remarkable."<\/p>\n

Morris' former State of Origin captain, Paul Gallen, agreed with Sterling's assessment.<\/p>\n

"Still one of the best wingers in the comp for the past couple of years," Gallen said on The Sunday Footy Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"You give him half a chance, he gets it done. He scores the try 99 per cent of the time. He's just so tough, one of the game's greatest wingers ever.<\/p>\n

"And such a good bloke, honestly one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. I was lucky to tour with him plenty of times, played a lot of State of Origin with him. Just a good guy, good family man, the type of guy you want in your team.<\/p>\n

"To go out like this, it must be really, really hard for him."<\/p>\n
