An injury-hit Essendon<\/a> side has been dealt another blow with former No.1 pick Andrew McGrath likely to miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury.<\/p>\n

McGrath was substituted off in the first quarter of the Dreamtime clash against Richmond<\/a>, with scans confirming a grade two PCL injury, which will rule him out for eight to 12 weeks.<\/p>\n

The loss of McGrath is a cruel blow to a surging Essendon side that has been one of the feel-good stories of the 2021 season, with Ben Rutten's side currently ninth on the ladder.<\/p>\n

In the absence of star midfielder Dylan Shiel<\/a>, McGrath has combined to great effect with the duo of Darcy Parish and Zach Merrett in Essendon's engine room.<\/p>\n

"We are really disappointed for Andy who was putting together a consistent season to date as part of our midfield group," Essendon GM of football Josh Mahoney said in a club statement..<\/p>\n

"Andy is a true professional who will be very driven to see a return to play as soon as possible. We know he will attack his rehabilitation program and continue to contribute to the team while not playing."<\/p>\n

McGrath has averaged 24.2 disposals per game through 12 matches this season, with his 4.8 tackles per game an equal career-high mark.<\/p>\n

Essendon enjoys a bye in Round 13, before facing Hawthorn for the second time this season in Round 14.<\/p>\n
