Former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has landed a new job as the director of rugby at Japanese Top League outfit NEC Green Rockets.<\/p>\n

Cheika, whose Wallabies tenure ended in 2019, last year worked as a coaching consultant with Argentina and the Roosters NRL team.<\/p>\n

He is a member of Nine and Stan Sport's rugby coverage this season and was also appointed to coach Lebanon at this year's Rugby League World Cup in the UK.<\/p>\n

"I am very excited to be joining NEC in this new role," the 54-year-old said in a statement released by NEC.<\/p>\n

"Together with the company, the coaches and the players we will aspire to bring back the DNA of the NEC Green Rockets to bring pride and enjoyment to the whole NEC community.<\/p>\n

"I look forward to working hard together with everyone to orchestrate a brighter world for NEC rugby and rugby in Japan."<\/p>\n

The Green Rockets finished last in their Top League conference this season, losing all seven of their games.<\/p>\n

They made the playoffs by beating a second divison team but were thrashed by heavyweights Suntory Sungoliath.<\/p>\n

Their squad this season included Australian outside back Andrew Kellaway, who will return for the Rebels against the Hurricanes on Friday night.<\/p>\n
